Rocky Maloney – 23 Years Old (Owner/Photographer)

(435)901-2298 / [email protected]

I Was Born & Raised in Park City, Utah. I graduated from Park City High in 2006 with no real knowledge of what I wanted to do with my life. I bought my first DSLR, which was a Rebel XTi 400D. I fell in love with photography as soon as I hit the shutter button that first time, The rest is history! All my friends are amazing skiers and I always wanted be a part of the ski industry but just couldn’t cut it with the rest of the kids. I remember the first day I brought up my camera to Park CIty Mountain Resort and knew instantly this is what I wanted in my life. I started off very slowly just going up for fun with the friends, but myself and everyone else soon realized I actually had some talent behind the lens. From then on I tuned everything I had into photography, reading about different techniques to use and just experimenting with anything I could. In 2010 I started a “365 day project”, in which you take a photo everyday of the year. This was the first real goal I set for myself and after completing the first month I honestly didn’t think it was going to happen. Once I hit December 31, 2010, and I finished my last photo it was an amazing feeling. my progression within photography was more than noticeable, and looking back on the project now I remember everyday of the year. I also started working for a ski website called “newschoolers.com” which has a huge following. I travel around following different ski competitions, writing articles and editing photos for the online ski community of over 300,000.

During that year (2010)  I officially started “rocmaloney//PHOTOGRAPHY”. It was a rewarding feeling to file the paperwork and officially be a business owner at the age of twenty -two. Immediately following my newly purchased business license I got a call from Park City Mountain Resort asking for photos to use for advertisement in Freeskier Magazine. At the time I was at the driving range hitting golf balls, hung up the phone and realized that my dream of photography is finally coming true. I met with the marketing director of Park City Mountain Resort and worked out a deal for two photo, one of Tom Wallisch and one of Ashley Battersby. They combined the two photos and they ran in Freeskier and other Magazines through-out the industry. Having been born in Park City and skiing at Park City Mountain Resort for about 20 years now I was more than happy to have my photos representing for the mountain. shortly after that I received news about myself getting publications in SBC Skier Magazine, Powder Magazine and Freeskier Magazine. As far as 2010 goes I will always remember that as my beginning in the industry.

2011 has brought nothing but good thing so far! After an amazing time at West Coast Session V in Mt.Hood Oregon, I came back to Park City and Tanner Hall got in contact with me about taking some photos just for fun. Taking photos with one of the biggest names in the ski industry was a little intimidating at first to say the least. After that shoot Tanner seemed to be pumped on my work, which in boosted my confidence. Josh Finbow (Director of “Retallack-The Movie” got in contact with me and said he was in need of a photo of Tanner which could turn out to be the cover of the movie. I was at Tanner’s house in less than 10 minutes ready to get the shot. Click, click, click, 30 minutes later all finished up Tanner’s pumped on the shots, Josh is pumped on the shots, job well done. A few weeks went by and then finally I got good news from Josh about the cover. He told me how they used my portrait of Tanner in collaboration with a shot of Ian Provo’s. This was by far my biggest published to date and I was beyond stoked.  Thanks again to Josh Finbow, Eric Iberg, Tanner Hall, Jase Wolff, Ian & Neil Provo and everyone else at Inspired Media Concepts.

In only a short two years I feel like I have experienced so much, but I am more than anxious to find out whats around the next corner, or who the next phone call is going to be from. I love what I do and that is where my drive and passion come from. I have heard many people say “If you love what you do, you will never work another day in your life”. Growing up I have always thought about that quote and I wanted to live by it, and I am.

I owe everything to my family and friends,  they made me the person I am today and I thank them for supporting me!
